2017 Peace-Building Institute in Kigali, Rwanda

I would like to announce the 2017 Peacebuiding Institute held in Kigali, Rwanda. In this program, students will travel to Rwanda to participate in a Peacebuilding Institute (PBI) with Weber State University and Never Again Rwanda. Students from outside the Great Lakes Region of Africa will join with Rwandan university students for a two week workshop. Through readings, site visits, lectures from specialists, and group discussions, students will explore themes of genocide history and prevention, transitional justice, and development.

Students on this trip have met and heard stories from survivors and perpetrators, they have visited genocide memorials, prisons, schools, parliament, and other governmental offices. They have met war criminals in prison, governmental officials such as the head of Parliament, the Minister of Justice, and academic specialists in their field. While every year is different, it is always an amazing experience that changes lives.

We offer multiple ways to take advantage of this study abroad. Please note that the dates of the PBI are June 5 - June 17while internship dates vary. 1) Students can sign up independently through Never Again Rwanda for the two week Peacebuilding Institute. This offers no credit and is not associated with Weber State. Fees are paid directly to Never Again Rwanda(http://neveragainrwanda.org/)

2) Students can enroll through Weber State (non-WSU students may also sign up and can transfer the credit back to their home university). The cost is $2,995 and includes the PBI fee, housing, two meals a day, insurance, transportation to additional WSU trips on the weekend, limited transportation in Kigali, and up to 6 credits of tuition in your choice of political science, criminal justice, communications, women and gender studies, and sociology. (Other fields are possible, but the research project has to be certified by the respective departmentchair at WSU. https://sites.google.com/a/weber.edu/pbi/

4) Weber State can arrange internships in Rwanda for those who wish to stay an extended time period. Students may earn up to 6 more credits in various departments with stays of an additional 4 to 5 weeks (3 credits) or 8 to 9 weeks (6 credits.) We currently work with 6 to 8 NGOs at any given time to place students. Limited non-credit internships not associated with Weber State may also be available.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Never Again directly or Dr. Stephanie Wolfe - stephaniewolfe@weber.edu
