The Holocaust Educational Foundation of Northwestern University, USA, and the Holocaust Research Institute at Royal Holloway, University of London, with the support of Pears Foundation, are pleased to invite applications for Fellowships to participate in the fourth European Summer Institute on the Holocaust and Jewish Civilisation. The Institute will take place from Monday 2 - Wednesday 11 July 2018 at the Royal Holloway campus, Egham, Surrey, in England. The programme is an intensive ten-day residential course designed to broaden and deepen the background of PhD students, early career academics, and established faculty working in Holocaust Studies and related fields. It is open to PhD students who are currently enrolled in full- or part-time programmes, and full- or part-time academic staff. We invite applications from a wide variety of disciplines and all intellectual fields related to Holocaust Studies. Please note that the entire programme will be conducted in English. Fellowships are available for up to nineteen applicants, each of whom will receive single room accommodation, board, and tuition during the programme (Fellowships do not, however, cover domestic, international or local travel expenses to and from Royal Holloway, University of London). The Institute curriculum consists of courses, lectures, and seminars taught by leading scholars on the following themes: the history of the Jews in Europe; Holocaust history and historiography; the Holocaust in literature and film; the Holocaust and modern thought. Summer Institute staff will include staff from the Holocaust Research Institute such as Professor Dan Stone, Professor Robert Eaglestone, Professor Barry Langford, Dr. Becky Jinks, and Dr. Simone Gigliotti, and faculty from UK and international universities including Professor Tim Cole, Dr Anna Hájková, and Professor Hilary Earl. In addition, the Summer Institute offers a complementary programme of guest lectures on special themes and field trips to museums, archives, and cultural sites in London. Applications should include your full name, address, institutional affiliation, webpage link and a detailed statement of 500 words explaining your interest and experience in Holocaust Studies, and intentions for teaching and/or researching the Holocaust after the conclusion of the Institute; a curriculum vitae (maximum five pages); plus, a letter of recommendation from a line manager. In the case of graduate students, a letter of recommendation from the primary doctoral supervisor should be provided.
