Sudan: Sudan Government Invited to Qatar for Pre-Negotiations on Darfur Peace Talks

November 22, 2018

The Sudanese government has received an invitation from the Qatari mediation for consultations in Doha on Tuesday to discuss ways to resume negotiations with the armed movements for peace in Darfur.

Dr Amin Omar, the head of the Darfur negotiation file told the Sudanese Press Services Centre “Qatar has asked the Sudanese government delegation to come to Doha to consult on the resumption of negotiations with the armed movements”.

He explained that the government delegation would meet the Qatari mediator, Mutlaq Al Qahtani, to discuss the details of the meeting.

Last week, the leaders of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and the Sudan Liberation Movement’s Minni Minawi faction (SLM-MM) leadership held similar talks in Doha at the invitation from the Qatari mediator, where the discussions focused on ways to facilitate the signing of a preliminary agreement before the negotiations.

A delegation from the SPLM North of the leadership of Malik Agar (SPLM-N-MA) held talks with the AU High-level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) led by Thabo Mbeki in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Thursday.

The meeting discussed ways to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in Blue Nile, South Kordofan and all parts of Sudan.

The delegation headed by Malik Agar presented to the African mediation the results of his visit to South Sudan and President Salva Kiir’s initiative to support the efforts of the AUHIP for peace in the country.

The leadership of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) stressed the need to achieve comprehensive peace in the regions and Darfur and an integrated political process including the political forces led by Sudan Call.

The movement said it had informed the mediation of the arrest warrants issued by the Sudanese government against the chairman of the Sudan Call opposition alliance, El Sadig El Mahdi, warning of its negative impacts on the peace endeavours.
