Tunisia has become the primary country of transit for migrants and refugees from Sub-Saharan Africa and Syria, which a severe economic crisis has exacerbated. This surge in migration has triggered a racist backlash from the Tunisian government, with the Tunisian police and National Guard targeting migrants and refugees with beatings, arbitrary arrests, and expulsion. Tunisian residents of African origin have also been subject to mob attacks and arbitrary detention by police.
