Details

Togo has faced a political crisis since the controversial 2024 constitutional reform, which opposition groups view as an attempt by President Faure Gnassingbé to extend his family’s decades-long rule. In 2025, Gnassingbé became President of the Council of Ministers without a popular vote. Government security forces have been accused of torturing, arresting, abducting, and killing opposition members and protesters, while authorities have failed to investigate many reported abuses. Meanwhile, the jihadist group JNIM has carried out deadly attacks, particularly in northern Togo’s Savanes region, killing civilians and soldiers and contributing to the displacement of approximately 12,000 residents. Political opponents, protesters, civilians, and northern communities are among those most affected by violence and insecurity.
