Details

Democratic safeguards have begun to erode in Kenya. The progressive Constitution of 2010 faces serious challenges in the form of executive overreach by President Ruto, who has also largely failed to address a growing affordability crisis. These circumstances, coupled with escalating state violence and a controversial finance bill, caused Kenyans to take to the streets in mid-2024. The state repressed these protests harshly, killing dozens of protesters. Violence against women, girls, and LGBTQ+ persons remains prolific. Meanwhile, the dismantling of USAID has put extreme pressure on Kenya's extensive refugee system, causing conditions within the encampments to deteriorate further.
