Although Ghana has remained a relatively peaceful country in recent decades, minorities face continued victimization to this day. The country's northern region has been left largely marginalized and prone to conflict between settled agricultural and nomadic pastoralist communities. In particular, Fulani pastoralists are subjected dehumanization and discrimination by the media and the state. Fulani are not recognized as citizens, and they have faced regular mass expulsions, such as during "Operation Cow Leg" in 2015. The LGBTQI+ community is also targeted with hatred and persecution, with the government recently introducing new legislation to harden punishments for LGBTQI+ people.
