Details
Nicaragua’s government, under Co-Presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, has intensified its systematic repression of political opposition, dismantling democratic institutions, restricting civil liberties, and targeting journalists and civil society organizations. The government has also extended its persecution beyond its borders through the arbitrary denationalization and exile of Nicaraguans, while Indigenous and Afro-descendent communities face escalating violence, forced displacement, and land seizures by armed settlers linked to organized crime networks. The withdrawal from UN human rights mechanisms and the elimination of judicial independence have further weakened accountability and protections for vulnerable populations.
