Details

Slovakia has faced growing concerns over democratic backsliding, restrictions on civil liberties, and discrimination against minority groups. During WWII, the Slovak government collaborated with Nazi Germany and participated in the deportation of Jewish citizens, resulting in the murder of approximately 70,000 Slovak Jews.


Today, Roma communities continue to face discrimination and segregation in education, housing, healthcare, and policing. Roma women have also been affected by the legacy of forced sterilization policies, with cases recorded as recently as 2010. LGBTQIA+ people face legal restrictions, particularly following constitutional changes in 2025 that recognized only two biological sexes and restricted adoption to heterosexual married couples.


Antisemitism, Islamophobia, and anti-immigrant rhetoric have also increased, particularly online and in political discourse.
