Details

Tunisia remains a key transit country for migrants and refugees from Sub-Saharan Africa trying to reach Europe, a role compounded by economic crisis and EU-funded deals to stop departures. The government has responded with a racist crackdown: the police and National Guard have dismantled migrant camps around Sfax, carried out arbitrary arrests and desert expulsions, and pushed thousands into so-called voluntary returns. Black Tunisians and aid workers supporting migrants have also faced harassment and arbitrary detention.
