Details
Algerian authorities have used COVID-19 restrictions to restrict freedom of speech and political meetings, especially for members of the Hirak protest movement and the Amazigh community. Over 300 people have been arbitrarily arrested on political charges and have reported excessive use of force, brutal interrogation tactics, and extended solitary confinement. The Amazigh, a third of the population, also face discrimination and harassment for their former association with the French during its occupation of Algeria.
