Details

Following a failed coup d’état in July 2016, repression of freedom of expression, disappearances, torture, and arbitrary arrests all drastically increased. Journalists and human rights defenders are regularly arrested under dubious charges of “membership in a terrorist organization.” Turkey committed war crimes during its October 2019 invasion of northeast Syria in which its forces targeted Kurdish civilians and fighters that had defeated ISIS in the region. Turkey continues to deny the Armenian, Assyrian, and Pontic Greek genocides perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire.
