Although Malawi remains a stable and peaceful democracy, ethnic favoritism by political leaders has resulted in deep animosity between its three provinces. Elections in 2025 saw the return of former President Mutharika to Malawi's State House, who has further such favoritism in the past. Meanwhile, Malawi is suffering from a prolonged economic depression and nearly 80% of the country remains impoverished. The government remains hostile towards Malawi's significant LGBTQ+ community and has neglected much needed immigrant reform.
