Details
Angola has made significant progress since the end of its civil war in 2002, but political repression, restrictions on civic space, and socioeconomic vulnerabilities remain major concerns. The government has increasingly restricted peaceful protest, political participation, and dissent, with activists, opposition members, journalists, and protesters facing arrests, prosecutions, and excessive force, including deadly police violence during the July 2025 protests. Conflict-related tensions also persist in Cabinda, where separatist activity and government repression continue. Poverty, food insecurity, and climate-related shocks further expose vulnerable communities to hardship, while women and girls remain at risk of gender-based violence despite existing legal protections.
