The Orban government has threatened the civil rights of marginalized groups, such as the Roma, Jewish, Muslim, and LGBTQIA+ populations, curtails press freedom to prevent scrutiny of the government, and fosters a climate of hatred. Roma people face systemic racism, popular prejudice, open harassment, and violent assault by ethnic Hungarians. Orban’s government has enacted laws limiting the rights of LGBTQIA+ Hungarians, including banning LGBTQIA+ content in schools. Orban's government also damaged Hungary's rule of law by removing the power of Justices to conduct judicial review and creating a constitution that allowed for parliament to change the constitution by a 2/3 majority. This allowed for Prime Minister Orban and his Fidesz party to consolidate power beyond democratic norms. With a change in government, there is room for improvement, but it is yet to be seen to what extent Hungary's new government will address the country's systemic problems.
