Details
The Salvadoran Civil War (1979-1992) saw significant violence against civilians, most notably in the El Mozote Massacre of 1981, in which the Salvadoran military wiped out an entire village of 978 people, including 533 children. Though the government apologized in 2011, the perpetrators of the El Mozote massacre and other crimes against humanity during the civil war have not been brought to justice. Today, gang violence and a corrupt national police force are rampant in the country. Women and members of the LGBTQ+ community face disproportionate violence.
