Angola: New Media Law Threatens Free Speech

Update: On January 23, Angolan President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos signed the new media law that limits freedom of expression, despite opposition from the Journalists Union and other groups. The union said it would challenge the law before the Constitutional Court.

(Johannesburg) – Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos should refuse to sign a new media law until parliament revises provisions restricting the right to freedom of expression, Human Rights Watch said today. The law grants the government and ruling party expansive power to interfere with the work of journalists, and potentially to prevent reporting on corruption or human rights abuses.
