In 2015, late President Pierre Nkurunziza won a third presidential term that critics considered unconstitutional, triggering mass protests, a failed coup d'état, and deadly post-electoral violence. Most refugees have still not returned since the 2015 crisis. The ruling party has also allegedly used rhetoric suggesting the Tutsi minority pose a threat to the Hutu majority. Since the death of Nkurunziza and the succcession of current President Évariste Ndayishimiye to power, the Burundian authorities have continued to subject citizens and political opponents to human rights abuses. Burundi also has a complex history of massacres and genocides - in 1972 against Hutus and in 1993 against Tutsis.
