Since 2016, three Islamist militant groups, JNIM, ISGS and Ansarul Islam, have carried out violent attacks against civilians in Burkina Faso. The conflict has escalated in recent years, with nearly 10,000 targeted civilian deaths recorded since 2016, more than 60% of them since 2022. Both Islamist militants and government forces and allied militias have been accused of killing civilians and committing human rights abuses. The violence has caused widespread displacement, hunger and disruption to healthcare and education, leaving millions of people in need of humanitarian assistance.
