Since its establishment in 1948, Israel has been a site of conflict despite its founding aspiration to be a haven for persecuted Jews across the world. The Israeli state was established at the cost of displacing millions of Palestinians, triggering widespread regional instability and global conflict. On October 7th 2023, Palestinian terrorists from Hamas spearheaded a harrowing attack on Israel's military and civilians, killing 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages. Israel's response in Gaza and the West Bank has been genocidal, evidenced by mass killings, forced displacement and repeated targeting of essential goods and infrastructure. Israel's own domestic policies point to an increased risk of violence against targeted groups. Palestinian are subject to arbitrary imprisonment, torture, and deadly detention conditions. The Israeli state's support for violent settler groups, its legal obstructions to Arab representation in politics, forceful conscription of ultra-Orthodox citizens, and threats of denaturalisation to government critics are driven by an exclusionary ideology that seeks to narrow access to basic human rights. Polarisation and discrimination against residents of East African descent, Christians, and LGBTQ+ people add to a climate of tension. Today, Israel continues to commit the crimes of genocide and apartheid.
