Romania continues to grapple with the legacy of the Shoah. The memory of the Shoah continues to be polarized along political lines, with prominent politicians openly supporting figures from Romania's WWII-era dictatorship and calling the Shoah a minor topic. According to an Elie Wiesel Institute poll conducted in 2023, only 11% of Romanian respondents knew that the Holocaust had also taken place in Romania.

Additionally, discriminatory policies continue against Romania's Roma minority. Roma, or Romani people, have been discriminated against for centuries. Since their liberation from slavery in 1848, the Roma have largely been impoverished and have faced stereotypes and hate speech from the greater public. De facto segregation of schools has worsened over the past few years, with Roma-majority schools having notably worse quality infrastructure and staff compared to their Romanian-majority counterparts. Several Romanian municipalities also continue to effectively bar Roma individuals from receiving social housing.
