Malaysia confident Myanmar doing all it can to address Rohingya issue, says Deputy Foreign Minister

The Federal government is confident that the Myanmar government, under the leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi, is doing all it can in addressing the concerns of the global community over the treatment of Rohingyas in Rakhine state.

Stating that the Myanmar government should be given the chance to take appropriate measures, Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the democratically elected government was already making efforts to ensure stability in the area.

"This is a work in progress. The government is barely a year old.

"Reforms cannot be carried out in a day. Rome was not built in a day.

"The atrocities against the Rohingya community has been going on for many years. The Aung San Suu Kyi leadership is already taking action," he told the Dewan Rakyat today.

Reezal (BN-Kepala Batas) was responding to a supplementary question by Datuk Kamarudin Jaafar (PKR-Tumpat) on political measures and efforts to compel Suu Kyi to take more effective measures to help the community.

Reezal also said that the United Nations will issue a conclusive report on present developments concerning the Rohingyas in Rakhine State this evening.

The report will provide a clearer picture of what is going on in Rakhine.
