The Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora, Mr. Barry Faure, received the Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser of the United Nations Secretary General on Africa, H.E. Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa at Maison Queau de Quinssy on Monday 12 October 2026.

Discussions focused on the impact the war in the Middle East has had on Seychelles’ economy. Minister Faure briefed her on the measures adopted by the Government of Seychelles to address these external shocks, which included measures to build up national stocks of cement and fertilisers, as well as ensuring a steady supply of basic commodities.

Ms. Eziakonwa informed Minister Faure of an upcoming initiative spearheaded by the current President of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Dr. Khalilur Rahman, a meeting which will concentrate on the impact of the Middle East war on the African continent, with a particular focus on SIDS, and encouraged the participation of Seychelles.

Upon discussing the challenge of data collection faced in certain fields like health and education services, Minister Faure requested technical support from the UN in this field which, in turn, would greatly strengthen Seychelles’ international reporting outcomes and sharing of experiences and knowledge.

Increasing challenges in securing project funding, partnerships with regional organisations and how the United Nations can better assist the Seychelles with various initiatives were also touched on during the meeting.

Ms. Eziakonwa was accompanied by Mr. Jean-Paul Adam, Director for Policy, Monitoring and Advocacy in the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa to the United Nations Secretary General, H.E. Ms. Lisa Singh, the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Mauritius and Seychelles and Dr. Rex Mpazanje, the Resident Representative of the WHO to the Republic of Seychelles.
