Taiwan rejects Chinese statements after Trump-Xi meeting

China says Xi called on the US to oppose Taiwan independence.
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Comments by China’s foreign ministry after the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping calling on the US to oppose Taiwan independence showed Beijing was still misrepresenting the truth, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Friday.
China’s statement after Thursday’s meeting also said Xi had asked Trump to “handle the Taiwan question with prudence.” China does not represent Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. Only the people of Taiwan have the right to decide their own future in a democratic way, while the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are not subordinate to each other, the ministry clarified.
Taiwan is the responsible side that safeguards peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and in the region, the ministry said. China, on the other hand, continues to conduct gray zone activities and pose military threats in parts of East Asia, including the waters around Taiwan.
China has threatened several countries in the region, while interfering with normal relations and cooperation between Taiwan and other countries, according to the ministry statement. The ministry also mentioned that more than 60 members of the US Congress had voiced support for Taiwan ahead of Xi’s visit to the US.
