Amnesty International USA: Abolish ICE

ABOLISH ICE.

Our extensive investigation into ICE operations in cities across the country concludes that reform isn’t an option — the entire agency HAS TO GO.

And we must demand it right now.

Here are the most important highlights of our report:

• Human rights violations were repeatedly committed across enforcement operations in Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New Orleans, and Washington, D.C, including ICE and federal agents unlawfully using lethal force.

• The consistency of these violations shows that they were not isolated incidents, but part of a larger pattern of inhumane immigration enforcement.

• The unlawful killings of Alex Pretti, Renee Good, and Silverio Villegas González should be investigated as extrajudicial executions.

• ICE held individuals in short-term processing centers for prolonged periods of time, well over ICE’s 72-hour limit, in cruel conditions that may amount to torture.

• Not only have officials in the Trump administration shielded agents from accountability, they’ve publicly praised them for violating human rights, including killings.

• People protesting, providing mutual aid, or showing up to film the horrors they witnessed in their neighborhoods were targeted, surveilled, and threatened.

Gregory: The case for abolishing ICE is fundamentally different from a call for better training, new guidance or stronger discipline for individual agents. The scale, persistence, and structural nature of ICE’s failures are decades old and cannot be adequately addressed through piecemeal reform.

In this year alone, our people power has successfully freed individuals detained by ICE, shut down “Alligator Alcatraz”, and pushed back against ICE funding. We can do this.
