Details

In 2025, Tanzania’s reputation for stability was tarnished as the nation’s presidential elections devolved into a prolonged period of political violence. Rather than an isolated incident, the demonstrations and subsequent repression are indicative of Tanzania’s intensifying authoritarian slide. Since 2021, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has cracked down on political dissent, indigenous rights, and has failed to protect women, as well as LGBTQ+ individuals, from escalating gender-based violence.
